* I have a strong suspicion that this song is more or less a tribute to the town of Zozo in Final Fantasy VI. The town is famous among gamers because its inhabitants only tell lies, and the player must set the correct hour, minute, and second hands on a clock in the town while sorting through all the false information they're given. Though initiating conversation with NPCs in FFVI does not actually pop up any dialog which your character speaks, the NPCs tend to respond as though you're asking them for the time.
** Incidentally, the title of the song, Mimic, is the name of a well-known enemy in Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) -- a monster disguised as a treasure chest. There is a similar monster in Final Fantasy VI called "Monster-in-a-box" but there doesn't appear to be one in Zozo (unless there is in the Japanese version of the game).
*** "Cannibox" is what tipped me off to the video game references. Cannibox is another Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) enemy which is very similar to the Mimic.
**** This is clearly a reference to THE SKULL FUCK REVOLVERS' own glasses-wearing mandolin player, Lulu. In the song, Lulu has a brief mandolin solo after this line.
As you can probably tell I'm a big FF nerd and a bit of a DQ nerd, but could stand to learn more about DQ. If anything in here jumps out to you as a DQ reference that I missed, please let me know in the comments!
